CHIAPAS

MARCH 2023
There are perks to having no official brand sponsors for a trip.
There’s no one to tell you “no” when you suggest taking a group of visiting guests to an autonomous Mexican town and it’s Mayan x Spanish Catholic church known for chicken sacrifice for example.
Visiting Chiapas and its Mayan townships of Chamula and Zinacant
án was one of the best and most richest cultural experiences I’ve had to date. I don’t think I’m wrong in assuming that most bartenders and industry people would prioritise Mexico’s Tequila and Mezcal states, but I am forever grateful to the Handshake team that they thought differently.

CHAMULA

Limited images of the strict, autonomous town of Chamula.
Photography of the indigenous Tzotzil Mayan people and inside the San Juan Church are prohibited.
A funeral, graveyard and the Iglesia de San Juan.

ZINACANTÁN

The backstrap loom, traditional textiles, vegetarian tacos and fresh flowers in abundance inside the Iglesia de San Lorenzo.

Cañón del Sumidero

Water, wind and blue skies followed by tacos with chicharrón and marimba.

San Cristóbal de las Casas

A short afternoon of wandering the main streets of San Cristóbal.
